On 26 March 2012 the revised Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) was published in the Federal Register, to be effective on 25 May 2012 and become mandatory on 1 June 2015. This phase-in period is to give industry enough time to produce labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) consistent with the revised provision, During this period employers will be allowed to use at their own discretion, the existing HCS, the revised one, or both. This is from an article in yesterday’s Kingston Whig Standard about a local man who was found to have been issuing workplace safety training certificates without providing the training and without having the accreditation he professed. OSG is holding classes on this in Winnipeg, Calgary and British Columbia in April 2012. Why, you might ask?
Well, last year some customers asked us to do it for their branches in BC, AB and MN. We did the classes and got an outstanding reaction from the attendees and their employers. So we decided to do it again, this time with a little more publicity.
You might also question why an Ontario-based business presumes that it can teach anything to western Canadian businesses?

A new booklet from the Ministry of Labour booklet called “A Guide for Joint Health and Safety Committees and Representatives in the Workplace” has been published.

Although it is dated May, 2011 it does not contain anything about the impact of Bill 160 on those committees. It includes the following statement:
